9/13/2023 0 Comments Kindle vs kindle for kidsThe Kindle DX is too big and the Kindle is too small. After having used both for a week, I am also. If you're torn between the two, it's understandable. The small-size Kindle 2 is fantastic for prose and horrible for charts, graphs and code. In English, this means if you're wanting to read technical books, you get a Kindle DX. First, no PDF support built in, and two, if it was converted to Kindle-format, it'd be destroyed. It would be totally NOT readable on the non-DX Kindle for two reasons. Here's a screenshot of a PDF taken from the Kindle DX. I don't know what the real limitations of the PDF support are, but I'm sure they're improving it constantly, and the Kindle can update it's OS over the 3G network, so those updates will presumably just happen. The failures have only been on internal documents that have annotations and stuff. Rare, and usually it's because there's some advanced PDF feature being used that the Kindle doesn't support. It works for 95% of PDFs, but every once in a while I've had it fail. That means you can just plug it in over USB, copy a PDF and boom, you're viewing it. Effectively you can fit double the text on the page of the Kindle DX.Īlso, the Kindle DX has native PDF support. The "so the" appears right in the middle of this screen. Here's the same book, same point, starting with "morning" on the Kindle DX. Notice that it starts with the word "morning" and ends with "duration, so the." Here's a screenshot taking from the Kindle 2 of a book. Also, the keyboard on the Kindle 2 uses far too much vertical space. There's easily enough room on the Kindle 2 to make the screen a 7" screen just by tightening up that space. There's just WAY to too much "whitespace" between the edge of the kindle and the screen itself. I don't know what the technical limitations are and I don't really care. That's the space between the screen and the edge. The real tragedy of the Kindle is the bezel. Let's get serious on size and layout here. There's zero eye strain, or no more than a regular book. It's very very close to paper and once you've started reading you really do forget it's not paper. It's e-ink and it's totally unique when you see it. The screen on a Kindle is EXTREMELY clear. It's got 4gig internal storage which I've found is effectively unlimited. That's 1200 x 824 pixel resolution at 150 dpi. The Kindle DX is 10.4" x 7.2" x 0.38" and the screen is 9.7" (yes, nearly 10"!) diagonally. As a comparison, you monitor is likely 96dpi, possible 120dpi. It's got a 600x800 pixel display, so that's 167 dpi with 16 grays. The Kindle 2 is 8" x 5.3" x 0.36" but the screen is 6" diagonally. I own the standard-sized Amazon Kindle 2 - it's the little one in the picture on the right. ![]() I read it every night and have probably bought a dozen books with it, several newspapers and I read many dozen PDFs. ![]() I'm absolutely thrilled with my Amazon Kindle. 9/13/2023 0 Comments Compact dishwasher stainless steelMost compact dishwashers have six place settings, half that of the smallest full-sized dishwashers. 9/13/2023 0 Comments Gaslight lyrics![]() ![]() The research paper, "Gaslighting: A Marital Syndrome" (1988), includes clinical observations of the impact on wives after their reactions were mislabeled by their husbands and male therapists. ![]() After investigation, it was discovered that her ' paranoia' had been the result of gaslighting by staffers of the retirement home, who knew the woman had suffered from paranoid psychosis 15 years prior. In 1977, at a time when published literature on gaslighting was still "sparse", Lund and Gardiner published a case report on an elderly woman who was repeatedly involuntarily committed for alleged psychosis, by staffers of her retirement home, but whose symptoms always disappeared shortly after admittance without any treatment. īarton and Whitehead (1969) described three case reports of gaslighting with the goal of securing a person's involuntary commitment to a psychiatric hospital, motivated by a desire to get rid of relatives or obtain financial gain: a wife attempting to frame her husband as violent so she could elope with her lover, another wife alleging that her pub-owning husband was an alcoholic in order to leave him and take control of the pub, and a retirement home manager who gave laxatives to a resident before referring her to a psychiatric hospital for slight dementia and incontinence. Since the 1970s, the term has been used in psychoanalytic literature to describe a "conscious intent to brainwash". The word gaslighting (referring to the behavior described in the above amateur psychology section) is occasionally used in clinical literature, but is considered a colloquialism by the American Psychological Association. Gaslighting is distinct from genuine relationship conflict in that one party manipulates the perceptions of the other. Over time, the listening partner may exhibit symptoms often associated with anxiety disorders, depression, or low self-esteem. Gaslighting typically occurs over a long duration and not on a one-off basis. one partner is consistently negating the other's perception, insisting that they are wrong, or telling them that their emotional reaction is irrational or dysfunctional.one partner is consistently listening and considering the other partner's perspective.Gaslighting is different from genuine relationship disagreement, which is both common and important in relationships. Gaslighting is typically effective only when there is an unequal power dynamic or when the gaslighted has shown respect to the gaslighter. Gaslighting involves two parties the "gaslighter", who persistently puts forth a false narrative, and the "gaslighted", who struggles to maintain their individual autonomy. Gaslighting is a term used in self-help and amateur psychology to describe a dynamic that can occur in personal relationships (romantic or parental) and in workplace relationships. Oxford University Press named gaslighting as a runner-up in its list of the most popular new words of 2018. The American Dialect Society named gaslight the "most useful" new word of 2016. The term has received a number of notable recognitions. Merriam-Webster defines it as " psychological manipulation" to make someone question their "perception of reality" leading to "dependence on the perpetrator". Largely an obscure or esoteric term until gaining traction in the mid-2010s – The Times only used it nine additional times in the following 20 years – it has broadly seeped into the English lexicon since, and is now used more generally. According to the American Psychological Association in 2021, gaslighting "once referred to manipulation so extreme as to induce mental illness or to justify commitment of the gaslighted person to a psychiatric institution". The gerund form gaslighting was first used in the 1950s, particularly in the episode of The Burns and Allen Show in The New York Times, it was first used in a 1995 column by Maureen Dowd. The term "gaslighting" itself is neither in the screenplay nor mentioned in either the films or the play in any context. In the story the husband secretly dims and brightens the indoor gas-powered lighting but insists his wife is imagining it, making her think she is going insane. Set among London's elite during the Victorian era, it portrays a seemingly genteel husband using lies and manipulation to isolate his heiress wife and persuade her that she is mentally unwell so that he can steal from her. The term alludes to the 1944 American film Gaslight, a remake of the 1940 British film of the same name, which in turn is based on the 1938 thriller play Gas Light. Michelle, going into season 3, you had a blank canvas since Star Trek: Discovery is no longer a prequel. ![]() I wish I could tell you, but I can say that everything you already know about this woman, everything you've already seen this woman do and learn, is implemented one thousand percent. You get to see her continual learning process. Because just like the journey to the chair, you also get to journey through the chair with Burnham. Sonequa Martin-Green: I wish I could! Actually, Michelle said something earlier that I thought was really perfect for this: You will see as we go. Can you give us some hints on how Captain Burnham runs her ship now that she's in the big chair? Kirk was very different from Picard, for example. Screen Rant: Every Star Trek Captain has a distinct and even famous style of command. Everybody's gotta learn when you first take that seat, and Burnham definitely does and will. But at the same time, the other yes to your question, there is still lots to learn. Not hoard it but just carry it healthily. Now there's space for Burnham to take the responsibility the way that she should. There was a lot of putting an image out there to gain approval or to gain absolution. There was a lot of overcompensation happening there. Behavior that was self-oriented even though Burnham didn't realize it. Burnham was a responsibility hoarder in the beginning of the series but a lot of that was because of self-fulfilling behavior. Sonequa Martin-Green: I think the answer is a double yes. Is she prepared now to have all of the responsibility as Captain of the Discovery or will this be a learning process for her? Culber (Wilson Cruz) referred to Burnham as a 'responsibility hoarder'. There are still all of the good things as well. ![]() We're also dealing a lot with uncertainty in season 4, which you might have gathered from the trailer and this new threat that's coming. Michelle, Star Trek: Discovery season 3 had overarching themes of hope and family. But as an entry into the Star Trek franchise, Discovery is not exactly a shining light.Screen Rant took part in a press roundtable with Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Captain Burnham, and showrunner Michelle Paradise. If the writers had just taken the premise and characters and not made any attempt to place them within the Star Trek universe, I might actually have rated this show higher. My main problem was with the central premise and the visual look of the show.ġ, The spore drive just felt out of place in the Star Trek franchise.Ģ. Unlike others, I didn't have any particular beef with the central character - Michael Burnham - or the actress that played her. Roddenberry must be rolling over in his grave (ok, I know he was cremated).Īs someone who has watched every Star Trek episode starting in the 60's, I just don't see how the writers / directors came up with this and can call it Star Trek. Further, and I don't know why this is so, but the level of the sounds of explosions, shaking, banging, etc drowned out any conversation (sometimes that was fortunate, as so much of the conversation was inane), but making a lot of loud noises doesn't make it a space science fiction story. The technology shown was way ahead of its time, apparently to make up for the lousy script, nonsensical actions by the crew, and a weak story line. The story line was unbelievable, as if it was some alternate story of the Star Trek universe. All the staring into the camera, the weepy eyes constantly, the miserably ridiculous lines, the endless worthless conversations, even in the event of danger, all made for episodes that lacked any of the uniqueness of any of the Star Trek series. The acting is way overdone, especially by Martin-Green. They prefer wide-open spaces, and thrive near coasts where shorebirds are common, but they can be found everywhere from tundra to deserts. Peregrines hunt from above and, after sighting their prey, drop into a steep, swift dive that can top 200 miles an hour. Ducks have the smallest wing size relative to body size – giving them a high wing loading, and requiring they need to fly faster to stay in the air.Įven still, researchers find it hard to get verifiable speed measurements for birds in flight, as so few species can be trained to fly in a straight line. These falcons are formidable hunters that prey on other birds (and bats) in mid-flight. Ducks and other waterfowl tend to fly almost double this 40 km per hour number, driven in large part because of their body shape. Researchers who used Doppler radar to track birds say that most bird species cruise at around 40 kilometers per hour, though this rough average speed changes according to headwinds and tailwinds and whether a bird is escaping a predator or chasing prey. Peregrine falcon 390 kilometers per hourĪlthough golden eagles are the third-fastest diving bird, it’s actually unusual for these giant birds to reach their top speed by stooping at 240 kilometers per hour – they usually hunt by flying low over land and striking prey with their talons. Their aerodynamic shape combined with the force of gravity leads to stooping birds reaching enormous speeds, often stunning or killing their prey outright on impact.Īlthough these stooping birds are the fastest animals in the sky, is diving really flying? The gravity-assisted nature of this hunting technique is more of a controlled fall than flying, hence them being broken out into a separate section. Many birds of prey use a high-speed attack dive known as ‘stooping’, where they fly high above their prey before closing their wings and falling into a downwards dive. On that note, let’s find out the fastest birds in the world in the air (both diving and flying horizontally), on land, and in the sea: The 3 fastest birds – stooping speed What is stooping? As this article shows, that assumption is incorrect. It was only in 2009 that a team of researchers from Sweden’s Lund University used high-speed cameras to scientifically measure the flight speed of the Common Swift, which at the time was thought to be the fastest bird in the world. Even still it’s hard to get exact results as there are so few bird species that can be trained to fly in a straight line. The speed of a bird is usually measured using radar devices similar to radar traps used in road traffic, along with small planes or drones in some cases. And when it comes to measuring the speed of a bird in the air, this too can be divided into birds flying horizontally and birds diving – or ‘stooping’. The ostrich is the fastest animal on two legs, while there are some birds that can swim and dive at quite a rate. The answer to the question on the fastest bird actually depends on where the bird is, and what it’s doing when its speed is measured. In fact, there’s a story that it was this very question that launched the Guinness Book of Records. ‘What is the fastest bird in the world?’ is a common question. |
